Spiritual Leader: In the Name of
Me
The object of this game is to start a cult, accrue followers, and drive
competing cults out of business. This game would be run as a sim, with the
player making choices, which would affect the way the cult develops. Important
choices would include base of operations (in the heart of a major city,
or in an isolated spot away from the "evils" of civilization), philosophy
and goals of the group (universal love and tolerance, isolationist zealots,
confrontational reformists, etc.), and the group's conspicuity (visible
and well known, or an underground secret society). After designing the basics
of their cult, players would design a plausible origin, be it an astronomical
event, mystic revelation, discovery of lost tomes, etc. Once the groundwork
has been laid, the player would begin to recruit followers. At first, the
player would have to personally cruise malls, bus terminals, college campuses,
etc. to find followers. However, once a core of believers has been obtained,
much of the recruitment can be delegated. Money gathered from followers
can be used to upgrade facilities, buy provisions, and recruit additional
followers (via television and newspapers for "above-board" groups, or via
underground publications for shadier ones). Of course, the wealth of the
group can be used for personal luxuries, but at the risk of alienating devotees.
Competition would come from many angles, including rival cults seeking to
lure away followers and their money, vengeful relatives of cult members,
mainstream religious groups, as well as political and law enforcement groups
seeking to shut down operations. Of course, recruiting a few well-connected
individuals may help deter some of these threats, and failing that, well,
maybe the cult has some extra cash that could be used towards a "worthy
cause." The game could be played in free-play mode, or as a series of scenarios
with specific goals incorporating the above ideas.

I would definitely use my cult's money for personal
luxuries. Isn't that what cults are for? Good game idea.
