Westwoods’s game art & design program will teach you everything you will need to know before you apply for a job in the game industry.
My idea is for an online rpg in which the player may only have 1 character per server. The reason for this is that once the character lives out his or her life within the game he will begin the game again as his son or daughter.
Gender of each character would be chooseable. Npcs can bear children for a price, to combat the fact that more men than women play games. However, with an in game item, and once a certain age has been met it is possible for the player to marry and produce offspring with other players online, in this case the child birth would be twins, one male, one female, going to the father and mother respectively.
Inter-racial breeding would be allowed and could produce new offspring. A elf and human for instance would yeild a half elf, a dwarf and human may yeild a slightly hobbitish figure, etc.
Physical appearance of offspring would be based on the attributes of the parents. If one had dark skin and one light there would be a 50/50 chance of the child having dark/light skin or maybe even a shade half way in between. Similarly, if one was tall or fat the child may also inherrit such things, or the child may inherrit hair color/style/eye color/or any combonation there of
This would be predetermined at birth and not changeable. Forcing players to be slightly picky about their mates.
Also the child may inherrit special abilities right from the start or an accelerated learning speed. If for example, the father had marksmanship and the female had healing abilities, the child may have inate healing and arching abilities and/or learn them at a faster rate than someone who's parents had no skill in those features.
The lifespan would be dependent on race but average human players would live for about 800 gameplay hours before dieing of old age
Perma death may also result from certain quests wherein if the player dies he loses his life instead of respawning as in most rpgs
Normal monsters and mobs would not cause perma death but rather a fraction of money and experience would be lost. players can not lose levels however in this way.
--------
Other features would include: Intergrated ICQ/Aim/Email features for staying in touch with friends who don't play the game, Player created houses...
Lets talk about that for a moment... Up til now player housing in rpgs has always been carbon copy clones or blue prints...
What if instead... there was a system similar to the sims where the user could lay the floor, carpet, wallpaper, rooms, stories, furniture, etc, piece by piece, tile by tile, having free and COMPLETE control over what their house looked like.
-------
Other features also to consider would be: Anime style graphics, ragnarok online is the only online rpg in america to feature beautiful japanese graphics and music. This is a huge draw to its success thus far, and something that should be emulated. not everyone loves flashy 3d, contrary to popular belief.
------
The game should feature various classes and skills having at least 3 or 4 branches per level thus putting an end to cookie cutter characters, and having 1 character per account this greatly adds to replay value since they will want to keep playing and trying different paths.
-------
The game should feature non combat skills such as cooking, forging, painting, farming, music, gardening, animal taming, house building, furniture crafting, fishing, etc, etc. It should be VERY easy to make a living without ever picking up a sword and shield...
--------
When a character dies his possesions are transfered to his new character, or maybe the player could even create a will saying who gets what items.
------
Pvp should not be allowed or allowed only in specific areas. Pvp breeds idiots and morons and greatly decreases the fun of the game.
-----
There should be litterally hundreds of character models, allowing players to choose body type, hair style, various starting outfits, eye color/shape, lip color/shape, skin color, and various sets of animations, such as emotes like sitting, laughing, kissing, clapping, dancing, etc, like 5-6 sets per race and sex, this would help create a sense of uniqueness within the game.
All weapons and armor should show up on the character, and be layered, ie a breast plate over a tunic, or a robe over a long gown with a cape over that.
Certain items should alter hair appearance, ribbons tie it back, hats cover it slightly, headbands keep it out of eyes, pigtails, braids, hair down to their feet, etc
Guys should grow facial hair if they dont shave
Appearance of character should graddually change throughout the character's lifespan
-------
The game should be zoneless to discrease loading time, and very large as in it would take 3-4 real life days to walk across on foot.
----
There should be various types of transportation both animal and mechanical. horses, boats, wolves, dragons, giant birds, trains, motorcylces, etc, etc
-----
Players should have a direct impact on storyline, if a major boss is destroyed then that player's name should be woven into the story, as the one who defeated that boss. bosses should not respawn, and new bosses should be added once a week with new storyline elements.
--------
Stats should also change throughout a characters lifespan. A character may be physically and mentally weak at the begining of their lifespan but very nimble or dextourous, as it gets older it would gain strength and wisdom, and as it became very old it would slowly begin losing stats again --------
Characters may give birth to npcs, if this ever happens the characters would gain power in the storyline, it would happen randomly to avoid favoritism of the gms, if an npc birth is about to begin for storyline reason, it would be coded in to be birthed at say 2:35 pm EST on july 21st. and the next birth to happen nearest to but not before that time, would birth the npc. A birth of an npc would allow roleplaying possiblities and actions. --------
In the begining all players will be born to an npc family, the npc will provide them with a small house, starting money, and basic clothing/equipment, the family is random, and will have a job... maybe a black smith, maybe a knight, maybe even royalty. it would all be based on what plot of land is open and just go down a list filling in slots.
The player may not like his status in society, but thats how it is in real life, it is up to the player to overcome and change his status for himself, or make do with what he has, as we do in our daily lives.
You can also marry into houses/jobs/political positions (more roleplaying oppurtunities) thus ensuring that in your next life you will be what you want and where you want.
------
There of course would be many monsters and places to explore, guilds, party system, and all the standard mmorpg features.
------
I think a good way to prevent killstealing would be to only allow members within a party to attack a monster being attacked by someone else. IE they have to be in that person's party. Except for bosses. or if the one fighting turns on some sort of help system IE if he needs help and is dieing.
And a good way to split loot is just to autodivide it among party members after a kill, the rares would of course go to the one who dealed OR HEALED the most damage. thusly making sure priests also have a chance to get rares.
These are my ideas. I hope someday Someone makes such a game. untill then i'll stick with seeing the same carbon copy games with the same problems occuring over and over again

an rpg that incorperates all my favorite elements?! i'm in. first of all let me just say i think this would blow ever quest away. personally i've always wanted more costumization for my characters. though i hated the sims as a whole i always wanted to see their deep character maker put into an rpg style game. i also think its cool how a child can get hereditary skills passed down from the parents. great work rpg goddess.

First of all, the whole concept is unique in a way that your character can die and then you live again as the offspring. That is cool and all but I think that after awhile it would get annoying. I am not a major fan of MMORPG(largely because I don't have a powerful computer) and I do not like the fact that I my character is going to die. What if I had a really awesome looking character and mated with another character and the offspring comes out to be a two foot oompa loompa. I would be upset. However the customization in you game would be great because who wouldn't want to be the character in their own little fantasy. Overall, it is a great idea and one that I believe could catch on. However, imagine you awesome looking six foot knight dies and your stats get transfered to a three foot hobbit. Imagine the anger. That is unless your hobbit(or oompa loompa) looks totally awesome. In the end I can tell that you surely put quite a bit of effort into creating this idea and I want to thank you for letting me read it. I just don't want some overpowered oompa loompa going around in the game beating everyone up.
