Two words: a jeepney race (ok, that’s three). Anyone who is familiar with this fascinating form of public transport in the Philippines can imagine what a colourful, exotic and original racing game they would provide for (you only need to do a picture search on ‘jeepney’ on a search engine to see what I’m talking about, if you haven’t heard about those before). The colourful jeepneys were originally developed from WWII jeeps left in the Philippines by the US troops. Nowadays they are manufactured there and compete against each other in colourfulness and imagination with all the decorations, horns and gadgets - a challenge also for the game designer.
The pros for using them in the game are:
1) It hasn’t been done before (as far as I can tell).
2) It’s an exotic setting (background landscape could be jungle, beach, mountain landscape, village, town…)
3) The game would look very good because of the outward appearance of the cars.
The setting for the game could be e.g.: some jeepney drivers are having a day off and having nothing to do they decide to race against each other. They race through jungle roads etc, competing for the fastest driver. Often the condition of these cars is not so good (because of age, hard conditions etc) so some skill must also be used to not over-exhaust the car/engine. Obstacles on the road are e.g. other vehicles (motorcycles, tricycles, multicabs), cattle, collapsed bridges to jump over, muddy passages in the jungle (e.g. the road is under construction so they have to take a detour in difficult landscape). The player view would be from behind, maybe a bit up from the ground. The front of the vehicles is however the most attractive part, so there should be also front-view possibility at least at some points in the game. If there really is no game about these vehicles yet, there really should be!
