Learn Game Programming
DeVry's Game and Simulation Programming curriculum will prepare you for taking on various development roles in the game industry.
Game Art & Design Degree
Westwoods’s game art & design program will teach you everything you will need to know before you apply for a job in the game industry.
My game idea is for a comedy RPG called Back in Action. The game starts off with a group of typical RPG adventurers (like a big muscly warrior, an elderly wizard, a mysterious ninja, a healer, etc.) preparing for battle against a typical RPG final boss (an evil magical emperor-type boss). There would be a very simplistic battle screen, bleeping sound, very pixellated graphics - it would look like it was made for the NES, or even the Atari. Even though you would control the characters for the fight, you would be so strong it would be impossible to lose (maybe there could be one berserker character in the party who would attack automatically, in case the player tried to lose on purpose). After you win, you would be congratulated by the king, who would give you all medals, and it would look like the end of the game. The music fades away, and the screen goes to black...

The real game starts 25 years later. Graphics, sound, etc. are up to current standard. It turns out the emperor wasn't defeated at all, he simply retreated to his secret lair to work on a more clever and original plan than "take over the world by force". Instead of sending out armies of little minions (who got defeated easily by the heroes 25 years ago), he's hired assassins, demons, and even shopkeepers to work for him - his new plan is more strategy than brute force. One of the king's spies gets wind of the plan, and informs the king, who decides he needs the help of the heroes who defeated the emperor 25 years ago. Unfortunately, he can only find one of the warrior, who now has a wife, two kids and a nice place to live. When he hears about the emperor rising again, he says that he'll help, but he has no idea where the other members of the old group are. So, he has to travel the world and find them, along with other possible party members (like Part 2 of Final Fantasy 3, after the destruction of the world). Of course, everyone from the old group has aged 25 years, and none of them have been doing any training, so they'll all have to train quite a bit to get their strength and skills back.

They will also have to perform some side quests, some of them related to the emperor, some of them just helping the group get stronger and help people, and possibly get some rare items or weapons. There would also be a sub-game involving the emperor's assassins, which have been sent to kill you - you can either avoid them completely and hope they never find you, or secretly follow their trail and kill them (for example, one of the assassins could be a notorious overeater, so if you found a restaurant owner who tells you about someone who came in and ordered everything on the menu, you would know you're on the right track).

Added feature:
Remember in Earthbound, when sometimes Ness would get homesick, and he would have to call his mother or go home to see her, or else he wouldn't fight as well? A new feature in this game would be taking care of your characters' needs and feelings, as well as training them and building their strength up. In most RPGs, you can just make your characters wander around in the wilderness and make them fight over and over again, until their levels are built up. In this game, you would have to give the party food and drink (not just to regain HP, but to stop them from getting hungry), take them to hotels (not just to regain HP, but to stop them from getting tired), and even make sure they don't get bored or depressed by taking them to the movies, arcades (in one arcade, they could play the original game in which they starred), and also keep them in contact with their families and friends. When characters are happy and refreshed, they would fight better, when they are depressed, hungry and tired, they would fight poorly. Nobody can die of hunger, but if it gets to an extreme level, the character may have to spend time in hospital, costing you money as well as a useful character. You would know how their needs were going in each character's status screen (it would be a bit like the Needs screen in The Sims, except they wouldn't run out nearly as quickly).

In all big RPGs, there is enough dialogue to make the game just as funny as any comedy movie or TV show. This game would take advantage of that, with lots of parodies and references to other famous games, and clever dialogue. I think it would all make a great game, which would give RPG lovers something original to play.

The battle system (for the main game, not the start) would have the bar building up like in Final Fantasy, but you can attack at almost any time - you would do more damage depending on how far you build up the bar. The next bit is hard to put into words: on each character's status screen, you can choose the "minimum attack point", or MAP, where you can move a line along the character's attack bar to show the earliest time at which the character can attack, or do something else. The further you move the bar forward, the more damage you will do. For example, if you set the MAP at 50% charged, the character might do 200 points damage when the bar is 100% charged, but if the MAP is set at 75%, the character will do 400 points damage. Healers would heal characters more effectively if the MAP was set higher. Depending on what enemies you are fighting, you can choose whether you want your characters to do lots of things during battle, but not as powerfully, or whether you want your characters to do a small number of things with a lot of power. If you want a character who would only use potions or bombs, which do the same thing no matter how strong the character is, they should have a low MAP.

The start of the game is really humorous. But it would seem also like it's a very good roleplaying game; very well-founded and just uncomplicated enough to be tolerable even to those that aren't a fan of the roleplaying genre.

I think you've done a very good thing here. You've brought a whole new outlook on RPG games. Although, there is a strong suit I'd like to bring up- you say that you have to take care of your character's needs...well, what happens if you're in the middle of fighting and your sleep, hunger, or fun level goes down? will your character just refuse to fight and get beat up? A little rough around the edges but I think it's got plenty of potential. keep up the good work.
