Watched the movie Gladiator? It is something like that but not totally similar.
You start up as a young man dreaming of becoming someone famous. You parents have passed and you live with your grandparents. One day your grandfather tells you his story, where he was once a gladiator. It filled you with ambition and you decide to set off becoming a gladiator.
The story is set in Europe and you start off at 18 in the land of Scotland. You can explore the lands and it can be a turn-based game. You start off with bar-room brawls, slowly gaining experience and gold. You get to explore caves and forrests, meeting with bears and other meanies. Bandits are a good way of practicing your fighting skills and taking their gold and equipment.
Slowly you venture south and meet with mages, wizards, warriors, heros that teach you new skills and expanding your existing ones. Your hitpoints increase and your fights get harder. Finally you get to Rome and by then you are famous and was invited to fight at the colloseum. The twist of the story is after you win, Caesars guards were ordered to kill you because they cannot have a Scottish Gladiator.
