Learn Game Programming
DeVry's Game and Simulation Programming curriculum will prepare you for taking on various development roles in the game industry.
Game Art & Design Degree
Westwoods’s game art & design program will teach you everything you will need to know before you apply for a job in the game industry.
The Dark Elves and High Elves have fought for years. The player chooses a side and becomes a young elf fighting large battles. If he or she survives then you have the chance to gain experience or even move up in rank to an archer or a knight, ultimately to the position of lord. With each higher rank, the player will be able to lead a larger group of men, up until he or she controls all of them. Traditional battle rules will apply such as morale, retreating and rallying.
In between battles, there should be short quests and storyline elements. Skirmishes would be a part of this. The player could have patrol groups of cavalry fighting eachother or a group of footsoldiers getting cut down by elven arrows from the treetops. Another skirmish could include an ambush where the player must lead his men to safety and then rally them.
The player will be able to fight battles in different areas. There should be many of the standard, wide open fields. Also, he or she would be able to play in thick or thin woods, battle around rivers and lakes, and fight through towns with fleeing citizens.
As a player advances in experience, he or she can become different classes as well as ranks. In one battle, the player may be a lowly footsoldier and, depending on deeds in the battle, can increase in rank to a footsoldier commander or knight. The player will have greater power, but also greater responsibility with a higher rank. He or she will command men and their lives will be in your hands. Point of view comes into play here. I feel that a 3rd person point of view would be best used during most of the gameplay. A nice-looking first person view for archers would be a good addition, along with the option to go into a RTS-style overhead view once you command men.
Lastly, the course of the game would be a campaign against the other side. The battle would be decided on the player's leadership, fighting skills, other computer-controlled officer's skills, and a little luck. One feature that could set this game apart from any other would be that the player wouldn't need to win every battle. Every battle might not be winnable. Again, the player would decide the outcome of this struggle. If he or she loses too many battles then they could find themself fighting outside, or even inside their capital city. If players win enough battles, they could push into the enemy capital and win the war.
A multiplay feature could come into play here. Players would take up each sides and be able to fight certain battles or a long campaign. Also, more than two players would fight in one battle. Depending on limited server capabilities, eight or more people per side could control footsoldiers, archers and cavalry. Ranking depending on skills and experience would place a player in different positions. The highest ranking could even be a lord, issuing orders to other players.
I think that a game using this idea would be fun to play for fantasy lovers. It would also be fun because it is has not been over-done. I would agree that first-person shooters are very fun, but too many have come out with only one new idea. Some have none, just a different array of badguys and weapons on a different engine. Elven Struggle would combine 3rd person action/adventure with Real-time strategy and elements of first-person in its archers, creating a genre of its own. Also, the gameplay would be very non-linear, adding to the replayability.
